Social Science 800 Geography (Elective) (All Year Course) 103 A course that incorporates physical and cultural geography to give the student and understanding of global geographic conditions and their impact upon the development of regional societies. Units of study include global concepts, each of the continents, and through the use of case studies specific areas and/or geographic phenomena. Materials used will include the text, movies, lectures, and handouts. The students will be expected to participate in group discussions, simulations, and presentations as well as completing individual assignments such as essays, worksheets, mapping activities, and objective and essay tests 810 Government (Required) (Semester) 413 .Survey of National and State government. Will include State Constitution and meets the State requirements for U.S. and Illinois Constitution tests. Prerequisite - Senior Standing Grade Determination - Tests and Projects 820 Social Issues (Elective) (Semester Course) 213 Students will be presented with current and topical social issues such as: discrimination, civil rights, sexual harassment, and school reform. Students will be asked to form and defend their own educated opinions both verbally and in written form. A portion of each class period will also be spent examining and discussing current events on the local, national, and international level. Prerequisite - Sophomore standing. 830 Sociology (Elective) (All Year Course) 203 Sociology is the study of human behavior in groups. Topics covered include social stratification, aging, learning, socialization of the young, minority groups, and racial relations. Students will be expected to take part in classroom discussions as well as learn the basics of sociological research. The second semester of the year will be devoted to each student picking a research topic, conducting a survey of their own, and compiling and writing up their findings. Prerequisite - Sophomore standing 840 U.S. History (Required) (All Year Course) 303 1st Semester - American revolution, western expansion, pre-civil war, civil war, reconstruction, and industrial era. 2nd Semester - the 20's, 30's, and 40's, Vietnam War, and the modern presidents, Truman to Clinton. A unit of instruction studying the events of Black History and the History of Women in America will be included during the year as well. Prerequisite - Junior standing Materials used - textbook, lectures, written reports, videos, handouts, small group work 850 World History (Elective) (All Year Course) 103 1st Semester - Early civilization in Egypt, Rome, Greece, India, China, Japan, and Africa. Also Feudalism, early Roman Catholic Church, other early religions; Rise of town; culture and the renaissance. 2nd Semester - Reformation, Scientific Revolution, Rise of Modern England, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, Industrial Revolution, up to the 20th century. Materials used - Textbook, lectures, handouts, videos, small group work, and readings. 860 20th Century American History (Elective) (Semester Course) 213 History III is the study of American History from the Cold War to Modern Times. Topics covered include civil rights, John F. Kennedy, the sixties and counter culture movement, The Viet Nam War, Nixion era, Regonomics, The Fall of the Soviet Union, Persian Gulf War I, and Terrorism. Prerequisite – World History or Geography 870 Psychology (Elective) (Semester Course) 303 Psychology is the study of the human mind and behaviors. The course will cover such topics as human development, learning, personality and psychological disorders. The class will include labs and experiments. There will be frequent assessments that will include homework, quizzes, tests, and the occasional research paper. Prerequisite – Junior Standing |
