510 English 1 (Required) (All Year Course) 103
First semester: focus on written communication. Study and practice of content basics in expository writing -- topic sentences, use of detail, diction...together with study and practice in correct forms in writing---sentence structure, usage and punctuation, spelling, manuscript form---both by text and handout exercises and within each students' composition.
Second semester: Focus on oral communication and drama. Study and practice of public-speaking basics in delivery and content with continuation of work in written composition and grammar form first semester- practice in reading, understanding, and interpreting selected literature both semesters.

520 English 2 (Required) (All Year Course) 203
English 2 includes a review of grammar and writing with the emphasis on writing, the introduction to the term paper, the short story, a Shakespearean play, and two or more novels. Grading criteria - Objective test 1/5 of grade, daily work 4/5 of grade, special projects graded according to amount of time required to do them.
Grading criteria: Tests, Essays, and projects = 60% of grade Assignments = 40% of grade

530 English 3 (Required) (All Year Course) 403
Survey of American literature by periods of though, types, major authors, and major works. Study of composition by four major types---factual, expository, imaginative, and poetic. Work on mechanics-of-writing skills by study of types of errors and correction in own writings and by study of sentence structure. Completion of a research paper. Completion of seventeen or more unites of vocabulary study.

540 English 4 (Elective) (All Year Course) 403
Writing and reading skills continue to strengthen skills learned in earlier English coursework. Emphasis in the writing area includes multiple essays. There will be two research papers completed using the MLA format. Review of grammar skills and vocabulary are studied throughout the year. Emphasis in the reading area includes interpreting and comprehending novels.

550 English 4 College Prep. (Elective) (All Year Course) 405
The goal of college prep is to develop strong reading, analyzing, and writing skills with the same level of skill that a student will encounter in a first-year composition course in college. Multiple essays and two research papers will be completed. Grammar skills to be reviewed and vocabulary studied. A Shakespeare play will be studied.

560 Mass Communications (Elective) (All Year Course) 103
This class will deal with specific types of communication that reach a large audience at the same time. The class will focus on the development and publication of a school newspaper. One other possible area of focus would be a cable access channel and the broadcasting of specific Warren events.
Prerequisite - open to all 9-12 students
570 Creative Writing (Elective) (All Year Course) 103
Creative writing encourages students to understand and use diverse forms of verbal self-expression to create original poems, prose, and other genre through writing and presentations. From the experience of writing, students articulate inner feelings, appreciate nature, and broaden vocabulary and knowledge of writing elements. Each student will create a portfolio of composed work.
