9-12 PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Blue Ribbon Program Award winner for Curriculum 2007-2010

1300 Co-Ed Physical Education  (Required)  (All Year Course) 

Mission Statement:  Physical Education will provide an individualized, developmentally appropriate, and personally challenging instructional program that will advance the knowledge, confidence, skills and motivation needed to engage in a lifelong, healthy, active lifestyle.

REQUIRED:  All students will be participating in the ‘Warren PE Fitness Assessment’ each fall & spring. All blocks begin with Fitness Plan Warm-ups which are jogging, push-ups and pull-ups.  Students will be expected to improve jogging time in preparation for the Pacer.  Two ‘no-dresses’ or two ‘no-participations’ in a nine-week period result in failure for the quarter.  Four of either result in semester failure.  The only excused absence from PE is in written form from a doctor that gives specific dates and restrictions.  Classes are team taught covering the units of Muscular Strength and Endurance, Flexibility, Body Composition, Nutrition, Cardiovascular Endurance, and all Physical Fitness Components.  The curriculum includes a wide range of activities and sports.  Each unit teaches basic rules and skills, Physical Fitness, and Lifetime activities.  Weight Conditioning is required in the Fitness Center for every student. Grading criteria are effort, sportsmanship, participation, skill and written testing, and journals.

 

1310 Strength Training and Conditioning  (Elective)  (All Year Course) 

Mission Statement:  Physical Education will provide an individualized, developmentally appropriate, and personally challenging instructional program that will advance the knowledge, confidence, skills and motivation needed to engage in a lifelong, healthy, active lifestyle.

All students will participate in the seven components of this class.  They are:  Flexibility, Weight Lifting, Speed, Agility, Plyometrics, Core Training, and Nutritional Composition.  Students will identify Isometric, Isotonic, and Isokinetic types of training.  They will be able to perform muscular strength intensity variations according to their own fitness levels. It is divided into STI, STII, STIII & IV.  First year students will be required to complete a Twelve- Lesson program all-inclusive. Second year students will study six units from the “Fitness and Health” text including  Benefits of Aerobic Fitness, Understanding Muscular Fitness,  Benefits of Muscular Fitness, Improving Your Muscular Fitness, Nutrition and Health, Performance in Sport. Third and fourth year students will design their own programs and incorporate the HEAVY, MEDIUM-HEAVY, and LIGHT days programs. I expect leadership and mentoring from these students. They will be graded on a Performance Assessment.  This is an assessment in which students will demonstrate their lifting routine that they have created.  Students will also be asked to perform and teach techniques to younger students. Students will discover the value of good habits, personal discipline, and hard work.

 

P.E. Leadership Program

Students may apply for this after their Freshman year.  Students enrolled in the Leadership program assist the Physical Education teacher by leading warm-up activities, helping individuals and small groups of students acquire specific skills, officiating game play, setting up and taking down equipment, and aiding the teacher with simple organizational tasks.  The purpose of this program is to enhance leadership skills, initiative, responsibility, and resourcefulness while also developing a spirit of volunteerism.

 

Any junior or senior that is participating in an extracurricular sport may have P.E. waived during the sport season. Juniors and seniors may also have P.E. waived if there is a conflict in their schedule that would prevent them from enrolling in a class needed for graduation.

400 Divers Education  (Required)  (Quarter Course + Driving)

To develop attitudes in students that are conductive to being a safer, more efficient driver.  Each student will receive sufficient driving and classroom time to qualify as a safe driver.  State law requires a minimum of 30 clock hours of classroom instruction and six clock hours of behind the wheel driving.  Students may pass a proficiency test for behind-the-wheel instruction after completing 3 hours of behind-the-wheel training.  Since this is a quarter class, the number of absences that a student can have and still pass the class is minimal.  Attendance is a must!  Students who fail this class first quarter and would like to retake it third quarter will need to present their case to a committee composed of the principal, instructor, and guidance counselor.

700 Health  (Required)  (Semester)  213

This required course explores topics designed to produce a positive personal health attitude.  Topics include human growth and development, personal health, nutrition, prevention and control of disease, public health, alcohol and drug abuse, smoking, and sex education, which will include issues such as sexual abstinence until marriage.

160 Library Science/Media Literacy    (Required)    (Quarter)    213

This class focuses on developing the skills to find and use various materials, and properly conduct research.  Students will be expected to know how to use several different web-based products to find books, magazine article, and appropriate websites.  They will also reinforce skills they previously mastered.   A capstone project will be assigned in lieu of a final exam that will encompass all the skills employed during the previous weeks in the quarter.  This project will take several weeks to complete in class and will include both a hard copy to turn into the teacher and a short presentation to the class as a whole.
