PHYSICAL EDUCATION ADVOCACY

As of July 2006, Warren’s School Board of Education voted unanimously to give one full credit for Physical Education beginning with Freshman of 2006-7 school year!!

Advocating Physical Education Classes that should be weighted:

Physical Education should be a weighted class.  It enables students to become physically, emotionally, and socially fit through sports and activities as well as providing aesthetic values, developing good sportsmanship, and proper mental attitudes.

The PE program is progressive from seventh through twelfth grade.  Jr. High curriculum consists of the instruction of rules and histories of games and sports.  They are also introduced to a strength-conditioning program in the Fitness Center.  All units taught include skill and written testing.  Textbook chapters are used throughout units in Physical Education.  Ninth and Tenth grade students are assessed over muscles of the body.  They also study the health and skill-related components of fitness.  They are required to incorporate the FIT Formula into each area of Flexibility, Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, Body Composition, and Cardiovascular Endurance.  Eleventh and Twelfth graders are introduced to lifetime skills and activities.  Students are required to design and perform their own personal fitness plan.

My goal is to present a curricula that is enriching and motivating to all students at all fitness levels and abilities.  Students can learn to make good lifetime health and fitness choices.  With the use of technology in Physical Education, students are educated about different levels of intensity they can participate in while developing their own personal fitness profile.  My objectives are:

1.        To encourage and assist each student to learn to move effectively and skillfully.

2.        To acquire a knowledge of and appreciation for physical fitness and develop a personal fitness plan.

3.        To emphasize developing and maintaining maximum physical efficiency.

4.        To encourage cooperation among peers in order for everyone to experience an enjoyable physical education class.

I believe that physical education is a part of the total school curriculum which uniquely focuses on the physical development of the child, while also addressing the emotional, intellectual and social needs of the child.  The main focus for each content unit shall be:

1.       Cognitive development in sport and game written tests, fitness education and how it relates to the sport.

2.       Affective development in co-education classes, sportsmanship and teamwork.

3.       Psychomotor development through activities, and skill development.

All High School students are required to take a semester exam.  All students are tested during the fall and spring with the President’s fitness test.  All activities are aligned with the NASPE State Standards.

Physical Education for the 2000’s is to be fitness-based!

I want my students to understand that fitness activities can bring a quality of life that money cannot buy.  Fitness activities should be fun.  By understanding the curricula presented to them, they should be able to make good choices for a lifetime of physical activity.
